What is bisexuality?
The PFLAG National definition, as shared in our glossary, is as follows:
Commonly referred to as bi or bi+. According to bi+ educator and advocate Robyn Ochs, the term refers to a person who acknowledges in themselves the potential to be attracted–romantically, emotionally and/or sexually–to people of more than one gender, not necessarily at the same time, in the same way, or to the same degree. The “bi” in bisexual can refer to attraction to genders similar to and different from one’s own. People who identify as bisexual need not have had equal sexual or romantic experience–or equal levels of attraction–with people across genders, nor any experience at all; attraction and self-identification determines orientation.
Sexuality can be fluid and our language around it is constantly evolving. There’s no right or wrong way to define yourself—you don’t even need to define yourself at all. Choose the words that feel right for you.
How many people are bi?
According to a 2022 Gallup poll, more than half of LGBTQ+ Americans identify as bisexual, making them largest single group in the LGBTQ+ community. The percentage of U.S. adults who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or something other than heterosexual has doubled in the past decade. This study shows that roughly 21% of Generation Z Americans (those born between 1997 and 2003) identify as LGBT. Bisexual is the most common LGBT status among Gen Z, millennials, and Gen X.
Ultimately, discovering who you are is a personal journey. No matter how you identify, you are special, unique, and loved.
Bi+ Health Month
Celebrated in March, Bi+ Health Month was founded and is led annually by the Bisexual Resource Center. Bi+ Health Month raises awareness about the bisexual+ (bi, pansexual, fluid, queer, etc.) community’s social, economic and health disparities; advocates for resources; and inspires actions to improve bi+ people’s well-being.
Bi+ Week
Bisexuality Week (also called #BiWeek, Bisexual Awareness Week and Bisexual+ Awareness Week) takes place each year from September 16 – 23, concluding on International Bisexuality Day (Sept. 23). Not sure where to start your learning? Check out great resources from PFLAG National and our partners!
